Accounting technicians assist financial controllers by collecting, checking and analysing financial information on their behalf. They usually work in a support role within a firm of accountants or in the finance department of an organisation. Those with more experience may become self-employed, providing a variety of book-keeping and payroll services to a range of small or medium sized businesses.
An Accounts & Payroll diploma day will demonstrate the following skills required for those seeking a career in this well paid industry:
Every type of business in every sector needs to be able to organise and manage their financial transactions. Properly trained finance professionals are highly sought after and considered an essential part of any accounts team.
Large or small, all businesses have a requirement for accounting expertise.

The use of technology is paramount to the efficiency and effectiveness of a business. The right staff with the right skills will ensure that the business is able to meet its objectives. A total command of Microsoft's universally accepted sofware is crucial; yet only a few take the time to learn it thoroughly and benefit from its full functionality.
A Business IT & Microsoft skills diploma day will demonstrate the following skills required for thorough training in Microsoft, leaving no stone unturned.
In addition to this, all Pitman Training students can work towards becoming Microsoft Office Specialists by taking MOS exams at our Microsoft IT Academy. If you are good enough for Microsoft, you will be a valuable asset to any employer.

"I was really apprenhensive and nervous about training later on in life, but I was soon made to feel at ease with the help of all the staff at Pitmans. Nothing was too much for them, they helped me every step of the way and I now have a great job. Thank you to all at Pitmans!!" (Sue H)
"When I decided to retrain I was impressed, in the first place, by the friendliness of the staff, and how everyones' names are remembered. It makes you feel part of the 'team' straight away. Also, although your learning is self motivated, they are always available to help and encourage." (Karen G)
"The staff of Pitman Training have always given me the best of service and encouragement in the courses I have completed and gone out of their way to help me when I have had difficulties in getting to their office." (Sheila B)
"I had been made redundant and decided to improve my computer skills. I had always been quite good with Microsoft Office so I decided I would study for the Official Microsoft Certification via Pitman Training. Everyone at Pitman Training in Dover conducts themselves in a very professional manner and encourages their students to achieve their goals and beyond. Since achieving my Microsoft Office Certification my confidence has increased and I have been able to assist many others with tasks they previously found impossible. Thank you to all at Pitman Training in Dover, I hope you get the award, you all deserve it." (David P)
"I found the training centre a pleasure to be involved with. Motivational staff were always pleasant in particular James who helped me no end achieve my goals." (Matthew G)
"For friendly & fantasticly helpful staff Pitman Training Dover is great! Being able to learn in a supported enviroment with the flexibility provided allows you to study safe in the knowledge that you have the freedom to progess at your own pace and at yourside will be Kiri, James or Paula! Without these three people I would not be progressing in my career, I would not feel released from fretting over education, I would not feel secure in my ability nor would I have the job I do!! From the moment you walk into Pitman whether it be for a informal chat or to study, a wave of warm relaxed friendly ease washes over you. I wholeheartedly support Pitman Training in Dover and will sing their praises to anyone who'll listen! They've helped me immensely, they can help you too! "After 20 years of working for P&O Ferries I was made redundant and decided to update my computer skills. The advisor recommended either Secretarial Diploma or Legal Secretarial Diploma, plus Level 2 English and Maths certification and Teeline Shorthand. The training was made up of the following courses: Keyboard Skills, Speed Development (40 wpm) Effective Business Communications, Microsoft Word Proficient, Microsoft Word Expert, Microsoft Excel proficient, Microsoft Outlook, Audio Transcription, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Powerpoint, Legal Module - Introductory, Wills and Probate and Conveyancing., GCSE English and Maths plus Teeline shorthand. When I was looking for new employment I had certificates which I was able to show my current employer.
These were up to date and showed that I had gone to the trouble of re-training. Since finishing my Pitman Training courses I have been Working as a Administration Officer at Canterbury County Court dealing with Public Law Cases." (Alison D)
"When I first went to Pitman training I was about to be made redundant from Royal Mail. It was recommended that I took the business diploma. I completed this and then went to work for East Kent hospitals NHS Trust in the Pharmacy Department I was told I was the successful applicant as I had knowledge of most computer programmes. The Pharmacy Department later closed and I was able to transfer to an office based job in Healthcare Transport due to the qualifications I had received from Pitman Training. I am using the skills that I have learnt in my current role and intend to continue learning new skills with Pitman Training with the help of training grants from my current employer. Thank you all at Pitman Training." (Tracy G)
"I left the Army and needed to retrain as I had no experience of working in an office. I went to Pitman Training and the advisor suggested that I take the Microsoft courses. I learned 5 Microsoft Applications and took Microsoft Exams. The certificates I had with me at interviews meant that I had the choice of 4 job offers. I was also taught to type and can now deliver 54 words per minute without looking at my hands - which was completely alien to me when I first started. I really enjoyed the training because I could learn in a short time and didn't have to wait long for a start date. I am now the PA to a Financial Advisor in Hythe and earn enough to support myself and live comfortabley. I never imagined that my life would change so much and am eternally grateful to the training team for their unfailing encouragement and support." (Belinda L)
"I was made redundant from the Post Office after 21 years service in March this year. I came to Pitman with a firm idea of what I wanted to study and the adivsor recommended that I studied the Foundation in Finance Diploma. I learned a great deal from this course. I have plans to take over a business abroad and my training with Pitman will be invaluable to me in this venture." (Ann L)
Top Ten Tips
for
Making a Great and Lasting Impression
1. Handbags – always use an appropriate handbag for every occasion. Keep it tidy and organised inside and always try to keep your handbag closed. No carrier bags!
2. Pockets – keep your pockets empty; bulging pockets are not attractive. Also, for all you guys out there, keep your pockets free of money and keys to avoid jangling them about.
3. Personal Communication – be approachable. Uncross those arms and look straight ahead; welcome people to you with your ‘open’ body language.
4. Meet and Greet – always stand to greet people and shake their hands; it is respectful and it equalises the power between the two. Always wear your name badge on the right side so that it can be seen when shaking hands.
5. Smile – your best asset is always your smile! Practise smiling whenever you can; it’s welcoming and you will be more likely to be approached when doing so.
6. Accessorise – use accessories to enhance any outfit. These could be belts, brooches, scarves, jewellery, even your glasses!
7. Shoes – a lot can be said about a person from the state of their shoes. Always make sure that they are clean and in good condition. And girlies…get them heels out!
9. Listen – even if you are really not interested, listen. Make eye contact, nod your head - look interested. It will make all the difference to the person who is talking to you.
10. Body Language – stand up and be counted! Come on everyone, do it with me; chest out, belly in, shoulders back, clench those cheeks, straighten your back and lastly, lift your head high.
Meet our Student of the Year!
Pitman Training Dover’s Student of the Year 2009 is Diana Roach, who has completed the Microsoft Office Plus Diploma, gaining a distinction in every course she did! Diana can be seen here with centre manager Paula Elliott and Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Dover and Deal Charlie Elphicke, who presented her with the certificate.
We have nominated Diana for the prestigious award because of her dedication and self-discipline throughout all of her training. Having seen our sign, she popped in for a chat with James, and started very soon after! She then came to the centre from 9 until 3 four days a week, fitting the training in around her other commitments. Diana originally trained as a dispensing optician, and is now looking for a change in direction.
As well as gaining a distinction in all of her subjects, Diana is our first student to have taken all of the Office 2007 courses. She thoroughly deserves her success and overall distinction in her diploma. Well done Diana!
