"After 20 years of working for P&O Ferries I was made redundant and decided to update my computer skills. The advisor recommended either Secretarial Diploma or Legal Secretarial Diploma, plus Level 2 English and Maths certification and Teeline Shorthand. The training was made up of the following courses: Keyboard Skills, Speed Development (40 wpm) Effective Business Communications, Microsoft Word Proficient, Microsoft Word Expert, Microsoft Excel proficient, Microsoft Outlook, Audio Transcription, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Powerpoint, Legal Module - Introductory, Wills and Probate and Conveyancing., GCSE English and Maths plus Teeline shorthand. When I was looking for new employment I had certificates which I was able to show my current employer.
These were up to date and showed that I had gone to the trouble of re-training. Since finishing my Pitman Training courses I have been Working as a Administration Officer at Canterbury County Court dealing with Public Law Cases." (Alison D)
"When I first went to Pitman training I was about to be made redundant from Royal Mail. It was recommended that I took the business diploma. I completed this and then went to work for East Kent hospitals NHS Trust in the Pharmacy Department I was told I was the successful applicant as I had knowledge of most computer programmes. The Pharmacy Department later closed and I was able to transfer to an office based job in Healthcare Transport due to the qualifications I had received from Pitman Training. "I left the Army and needed to retrain as I had no experience of working in an office. I went to Pitman Training and the advisor suggested that I take the Microsoft courses. I learned 5 Microsoft Applications and took Microsoft Exams. The certificates I had with me at interviews meant that I had the choice of 4 job offers. I was also taught to type and can now deliver 54 words per minute without looking at my hands - which was completely alien to me when I first started. I really enjoyed the training because I could learn in a short time and didn't have to wait long for a start date. I am now the PA to a Financial Advisor in Hythe and earn enough to support myself and live comfortabley.
