Touch Typing Skills can underpin digital literacy
Computer and internet usage is now commonplace for most of us - both at work and in the home. Yet as the digital revolution firmly takes its hold, many of us are being held back by slow and clumsy keyboard skills.
Advances in digital technology promise us all greater efficiency but we won’t realise this potential if we continue with a two-finger approach to using the keyboard. In essence, keyboard training formulates the backbone to digital literacy.
Touch typing is an increasingly important skill to learn and, like so many motor skills, it’s one that’s best mastered young before bad habits have chance to develop.
Touch typing helps users to get the best out of their computers, whether at school, university or at work, by allowing them to work more comfortably and productively.
Good typing skills eliminate the need to concentrate on the keyboard. Ideas can be expressed as quickly as they occur, freed from the comparative slowness of handwriting. Focus is entirely on the job in hand whether an essay or coursework, a report or proposal – and not on the frustration of correcting errors or nursing stiff fingers. Instead correct hand and wrist positions encourage good posture and guard against repetitive strain injury.
Schools and employees need to realise the importance of good keyboard skills and in turn they’ll reap the benefits through greater efficiency and productivity. But has the benefit of touch typing been overlooked? Is it now time to ensure everyone in society is equipped with this essential life skill?
