Competition winner demonstrates Pitman Training stands test of time

Delia Caple, Director of CitySec International, wins speed-typing competition at this year’s inaugural office* exhibition at Earl’s Court. With a stunning 80 wpm, Delia won Pitman Training’s competition and received a prize of £150 of Harvey Nichols’ vouchers.
On hearing about her success Delia exclaimed: “I was delighted to win last Tuesday’s speed competition at the Office Show. In fact, I was trained by Pitman in the 1960s. Our school employed a Pitman trainer to teach 15 girls shorthand and typing – she was brilliant. She had 7 letters after her name and she travelled the world teaching Pitman courses. Her name was Mrs. Melhuish and I will never forget her, or the Pitman training, which was excellent. Mrs. Melhuish was a stickler for accuracy; to her speed was not the most important, accuracy was. She did not allow errors and if you made one on an A4 sheet, you had to start again, and were not allowed to go home until it was error free. There was no Tippex in those days! At my first typing speed test I typed 15wpm - but no errors! Pitman gave me a skill that has sustained me throughout my working career. I now run a secretarial service in the City of London and am currently arranging to take a course with your centre near Bank – Excel Part 2 (Expert).”
