So, what does a Marketing Assistant do exactly?

There is no one, set task list a Marketing Assistant sticks to. Usually you’ll be assigned various tasks by a Marketing Manager and you’ll find that the role is extremely varied and you can work on different projects from one week to the next.

 A few of the tasks you could be asked to do include: -

  • Writing press releases
  • Copywriting content for marketing materials or websites
  • Organising promotional events
  • Assisting with the planning of marketing campaigns and post-event, helping to analyse success.
  • Working on social media accounts for the organisation
  • Communicating with clients, or other departments within the organisation.

You’ll also probably handle a fair bit of administration work that comes with the function of the department.

Working within the marketing department of a company, you will probably have a fair amount of liaison with other departments in the business, such as product development and sales, as the marketing activity closely ties all of these areas together.

So if you’re looking for a job that may not always be a typical 9-5 role and offers variety, becoming a Marketing Assistant should be on your list!

What skills and training should a good Marketing Assistant have?

These things are hard to list but here are top ten key attributes that most employers will look for in a Marketing Assistant: -

Training includes looking at specific areas of interest in order to get a well-rounded knowledge of markets and marketing tools, i.e. social media, Marketing Essentials, Event Management, PR etc.

Practical experience is also a factor an employer may look for, so if you’ve been working in a position and carrying out marketing tasks without officially working as a Marketing Assistant, make sure you emphasise these on your CV if applying for these types of roles.

Where can I work as a Marketing Assistant?

If working within a commercial business, the Marketing Assistant will usually support the Marketing Manager in planning, implementing and carrying out various campaigns designed to generate awareness and increase sales. There might be a team of you that work on different areas of the business or you may all pitch in and assign the projects as and when they come in.

Many Marketing Assistants work within a marketing and PR agency, whereby you work for a number of different clients who may not want a full time in-house marketing team but want the support, resources and contacts an agency can offer. This route will give a great amount of variety if that is something you prefer.

What kind of salary can a Marketing Assistant expect to earn?

The average salary of a Marketing Assistant starts around £18,000-£20,000 and can rise to £25,000-£28,000 as experience increases. These salaries are dependent on where you live in the country.
