This week local employees are being offered the chance to find out about career progression opportunities during Learning at Work Week (16th – 22nd May), an annual awareness campaign putting the spotlight on the importance and benefits of learning and development.

Simultaneously employers are being offered free staff skills evaluations to help them identify how their teams could be developed. It is hoped that this dual action approach will see a higher retention of loyal staff within our local business community.

Encouraging staff and employers within local businesses to use the campaign to bring up the subject of training, Pitman Training sets out to be the advocates for employees across the region. The 2016 theme for Learning at Work Week is “Connect” and the team are opening the doors for free drop-ins over lunch for any local employees wanting advice from their expert advisors. Free social media courses will also be up for grab for anyone interested in building connections online.

Throughout the week the team will also be on hand on social media @pitmantraining. Any employees or employers who can’t escape their desks can tweet questions to the team using #learningatworkweek or post on the Pitman Training Facebook page. Tips for workplace productivity and course snippets will then be shared across the channels from the 23rd May, to provide further support.

Claire Lister Pitman Training Group MD, based at the Wetherby centre said: “We’re keen to spread more positive and improved perceptions of learning and development both at business and individual level, as sometimes it can be seen as negative to ask for help – but in fact the opposite is true -the strongest employees are those who continually grow, and they find increased motivation and productivity. We’re looking forward to helping local employees identify how they could drive their career forward through topping up their skills and we hope this will mean employees stay loyal to their local employers and we retain talent in our local community”.

She added: “Whilst this activity is intended or all, we particularly hope it opens the door for those who may have barriers to learning, to discuss their needs. People who may have personal situations that complicate taking on training, be it childcare commitments or learning disabilities often get left by the wayside in big companies. We’re hoping they will use this week to identify their development needs and speak up about them. Online learning provides such flexibility that it really is inclusive for all”.

Free CV advice, guidance on getting into certain industries, changing career, and a free skills analysis to help people establish their current competency in things like typing and MS Office are available all week.
