Ruth McCance - Student of the Year 2015

Diploma Studied Executive Personal Assistant (PA) Diploma Course Category PA Courses

An Oxford Circus based student was crowned Student of the Year in Pitman Training SuperAchievers Awards 2015.

Ruth McCance, who, having realised that chances of career progression in her role were limited and as result decided to find new challenges and a career that enable her to evolve and progress, has been confirmed as a winner in the National Awards as judged by the high profile panel of judges .

Ruth worked as a receptionist in a veterinary surgery for 6½ years. Her chances of promotion within the company were fairly limited as it was a small practice. Although she loved the 'meeting new people' aspect of the role and the admin tasks, Ruth wanted to find a career that enabled her to progress and evolve professionally.

Following this realisation, she decided that a role as a Personal Assistant was the profession she would like to pursue. Ruth contacted the Pitman Training centre in Oxford Circus to gain more information on a course which would help her fulfil her newfound career goals, and enrolled.

Four months into her course, Ruth underwent an operation which meant she could not get into the centre to study for 5 months. With the flexible study and distance learning options available at Pitman Training, Ruth was able to continue with her studies at home, and although she found it extremely challenging at times, Ruth persevered, with the aim to fulfil her career aspirations and not give up. Ruth said; “Being able to work remotely was a fantastic help. I think if that option was not available to me, keeping up the momentum after such a long time off would have been difficult."

Through sheer determination and hard work, Ruth finished her diploma and soon after found a new job working as a PA within a legal consulting firm. Ruth loves her current job and is happy to be utilising the skills she worked extremely hard to develop whilst studying. She says due to the setup of the company she has a lot of input into how her role develops, and is so happy to be in a career she loves.

Judge Jonny Mitchell commented

"Ruth has not allowed barriers to affect her life; determination, grit and sheer bloody-mindedness and a brilliant work ethic."

With fellow judge Jamie Dunn commenting

"Ruth’s ambition to develop and grow into new roles would probably not have been realised if she had not had the opportunity to complete her course in a flexible way that suited her personal circumstances. After completing the course, Ruth then used this new diploma, and new found skills, to enter a role that provided her with the career progression opportunities that she always wanted."
